The herring oil industry in Norway had its origin in the guano factories, and in 1884 became the first herring oil factory established in Norway. Fish oil was initially used to, among other things, fuel and power. In the "glory days" there were about 100 herring oil factories in operation in Norway, as of today, 2009, only eight factories left.
Welcon group has gradually grown until today to be a leading player in Europe in the production of fishmeal and fish oil.
Welcon started production in the acquisition of Maloy Sildoljefabrikk early 90's.
Through the acquisition of Moltustranda, Egersund and Vadsø, Welcon was leading fish oil and fishmeal producer in Norway in 2006 after buying Karmsund Fishmeal.
At the same time, the fishing group Austevoll Seafood became a 100% owner of Welcon. Later, the Bodo Sildoljefabrikk part of Welcon, which currently owns 58% of the Bodo Sildoljefabrikk. Latest change in the Group was a merger of Welcon and United Fish Industries.
Today the group has five factories and one warehouse in Norway, and one factory in England, one factory in Scotland and one factory in Ireland.
